Obituary of Richard Gordy MR

On Sunday, October 3, 2010, Jesus opened his arms and said Richard Dean Gordy, Welcome Home. Richard was born November 23, 1931in Willards and was 78 years old. He was the son of the late Clinton Lee Gordy and Lydia Virginia Jarman Gordy and the grandson of the late William and Sadie Belle Jarman and Franklin and Mary H. Gordy. He was a member of Eden United Methodist Church in Willards, where he taught Sunday School, was a member of the choir, Laity Leader, Youth Leader and served on many committees. He dearly loved the Willards Campground, he enjoyed remembering the old campground and was a part of the revival of it in 1976. He labored in love of the old time camp meetings. Richard was also a member of the Willards Lions Club, the Republican Club, AARP, a charter member of S.A.L.T., M.C.E.A Retirees and the Eastside Memorial Post #2996 in Powellville. He supported the Willards Volunteer Fire Department in many of their endeavors as well. Serving in the U.S. Navy for 4 years during the Korean Conflict, he spent three of those years aboard the USS Missouri. Richard served on the Willards Town Council for 25 years, serving as both mayor and councilman. He was very active in the town, doing many things around Willards. He had a great interest in both the old Willards School and served on the committee to build the new Willards School. He retired from the Maryland State Roads with 30 years of service. Richard loved antiques, auctions, all animals, especially dogs, chickens and he loved flowers. He dearly loved working in his yard on his John Deere tractor. Even with all his hobbies, the greatest love of his life was taking care of his entire family. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rosalie Baker Gordy, whom he married on September 2, 1957; his daughter, Susan Hoeck and husband, Ed of Salisbury. He was blessed with two wonderful grandchildren, Andrew and Camryn Hoeck. He is also survived by nephew, Ricky Gordy of Salisbury, who he considered his son; nieces, Vicki Daisey and husband, Mike of Gumboro and Lisa Mitchell and husband Dean of Millsboro, who he considered his daughters; great nephews and nieces, who he considered his grandchildren and they all called him Pop Pop: Tim Gordy of Willards, Steve Daisey and wife, Debbie of Gumboro, Brian Daisey of Laurel, Amy Ward and husband, Shawn of Laurel, Melissa Conaway and her husband, Adam of Gumboro, Amy and Brandi Mitchell, Megan Daisey, Jackson Ward and Peyton Richard Conaway. He is also survived by sister, Anna Lee Bishop and husband, Joe of Salisbury; brother, Robert Gordy of Berlin; sister-in-law, Gloria Gordy Wainwright and husband, Tommy of Willards; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by sisters: Doris Benson and Virginia Lee Gordy, brother, William "Whitey" Gordy, nephew, Wayne Gordy, brother-in-law, Junior Hinchcliff and sister-in-law, Betty Gordy. "He fought a good fight, he kept the faith, he finished the course, and treasures are now laid up for him in heaven." A celebration of life home going service will be held Friday, October 8, 2010 at 1 pm at the Eden United Methodist Church on Main Street in Richard's beloved Willards. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 7 to 9 pm at Holloway Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. The Rev. Edwin Dennis, the Rev. Carol Price and the Rev. Tom Bunting will officiate.
