Obituary of Edward Todd
Edward Birckhead Lankford Todd, Architect, of Salisbury, passed away peacefully on Friday December 14, 2018 at Coastal Hospice At The Lake at the age of 80. Born in Princess Anne, he was the son of Arthur Wellington Todd and Myrtle Lankford Todd, and the grandson of the late State Senator, Edward B. Lankford for whom he was named.
A graduate of Harvard University (B.A. 1960) and the University of Pennsylvania School of Architecture (M Arch 1964), he practiced as an Architect for over 47 years (1964-2011). Mr. Todd received his early education in Somerset County, MD.
Prior to returning to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1972, Mr. Todd practiced in Baltimore for 8 years as an Associate with Cochran, Stephenson & Donkervoet, Architects, and as Vice-President and Director of Design for Tatar & Kelly Architects. Mr. Todd’s firm was established in Salisbury in 1972 as Meyers, D’Leo & Todd, Inc. Architects. In 1975, he obtained complete ownership of the firm and changed the name of the firm to Todd & Associates, Inc. Architects, where he was the sole owner and president for 36 years until his retirement in 2011.
Mr. Todd’s firm received many awards for design excellence to include Wicomico County Youth & Civic Center in Salisbury.
Mr. Todd was particularly proud that his design for the Princess Anne Elementary School in Somerset county which was nationally recognized for its excellence at an exhibit of “outstanding schools” by the National School Board Association in San Francisco, as he had attended the original school. The design for the school was used as a prototype for four other elementary schools in Calvert County, MD.
Over the years, Mr. Todd was a member of the following; Rotary Club of Salisbury, Green Hill Yacht & Country Club, Elks Club, Greater Salisbury Committee, Salisbury Chamber of Commerce, Salisbury-Wicomico Economic Development Corporation (SWED), United Way of Wicomico County (Board Member), Lower Shore Enterprises (Board Member), Boy Scouts of America (Tri-County District Chairman and Del-Mar-Va Council Member), and Harvard Club of Maryland (Schools & Scholarship Committee).
Mr. Todd will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. He enjoyed traveling, boating, fishing, playing an occasional golf game with his friend, Bill Smith (they never kept score), and finding special restaurants and great wines. Some of his favorite times in recent years have been phone conversations, visits and watching Orioles games with his dear friend “Buc” Shockley. He had a true passion for his dogs. Each were told they were “the best”, but “Simon”, a cairn terrier was extraordinary, and was a devoted and truly a “best friend”.
Survivors include a brother, Arthur W. Todd, Jr. of Princess Anne; a niece, Luise Pattinson (Paul) of Oxford, England; a nephew, Arthur W. Todd, III (Liz) of St. David’s, PA; a nephew, Alexander Von S. Todd (Aly) of Cumbria, England; a niece, Nancy D. Reed (James) of Baltimore; and a longtime friends of Mr. & Mrs. Todd, Jenny Bozman Henderson (Tom) of Norfolk, VA, Reagan E. Henderson and Nealy A. Henderson.
Mr. Todd was predeceased by his wife of over 23 years, Elizabeth Donovan Todd.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Rev. Norman E. Hancock. Interment will be private by the family at Manokin Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Princess Anne.
