Obituary of France Smith
France Edward Smith, 89, died peacefully on September 11, 2018 at his home. Born in Salisbury, Maryland, he was the son of the late Norman E. Smith and Mildred H. Smith.
France graduated from Wicomico High School and attended The University of Maryland College Park where he graduated in 1951.
After graduation from college he served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954. Following his military service, he was employed at Swanson-Campbell Soup Company, City Credit Company and then spent 32 years in the Investment Industry with Laird, Bissell & Meeds, Dean Witter Reynolds and Morgan Stanley where he served as Branch Manager before retiring in 1997.
France was a past member of the Salisbury Maryland Rotary Club serving as its president in 1968-1969. He was designated a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow in 1986. He attended Asbury United Methodist Church in Salisbury Maryland where he served on the Board of Trustees, Administrative Board, Pastor Parish Relation Committee and the Finance Committee. He also served on the United Methodist Church Peninsula Conference Board of Pensions. France served on the board of directors of the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore and was awarded the Chairman’s award in 2006. He was an avid University of Maryland sports fan and loved the Baltimore Orioles.
In addition to his parents France was predeceased by his wife of 48 years Mary Lou Burbage Smith who died in 2005. He is survived by his second wife Constance Cooper Smith who he married in 2006. He is also survived by his son Bruce E. Smith and wife Ellen, daughter Holly S. Foster and husband Keith, his grandchildren Brian E. Smith and wife Kelsey, Emily E. Smith, Allison E. Foster and Claire H. Foster, his brother William H Smith and wife Jean M. Smith and nephews Kenneth H. Smith, Robert Willing, Steven Willing and Michael Willing. France was also predeceased by a nephew Jeffrey M. Smith.
The family would like to thank Visiting Angels, Amedisys Home Health Care, Coastal Hospice and Jackie Shockley for the excellent care they provided France.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday September 22, 2018 at 11:00 am at Asbury United Methodist Church in Salisbury. Officiating will be Rev. William Sterling. There will be a private burial.
