Obituary of V. Matthews

Virginia Lea Matthews, 78, of Pocomoke, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 4, 2018, in her home, surrounded by her family and best friend.  She was a loving wife, devoted mother, and a pampering grandmother.

Lea Risley was born on December 11, 1939, in Seaford, DE, to Samuel and Betty Risley.  She moved to California at the age of 7 and returned to the shore at age 15, living in Greenbackville, VA, with her sister and brother-in-law, Ellen B. and Harris Bloxom.  She attended Atlantic High School and graduated in 1958.  After graduation, she worked as a seamstress in Snow Hill, MD, and later as a clerk for a local business. In her late 20’s, one of her friend’s introduced her to Richard “Dick” Matthews, who she later wed on October 4, 1969.  Lea and Dick owned and operated Modern Office Supply in downtown Pocomoke.  She later took a position as the Water Clerk for the City of Pocomoke, where she worked until her retirement.  Lea was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, in Pocomoke City, where she previously sang in the choir.

Lea loved her family, music, animals (especially her cats), a good joke, watching scary movies with her best friend, food, cooking, driving fast, Christmastime, tea, wine, and occasionally a cold beer.  She had a wonderful sense of humor and quick wit that people loved.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Dick Matthews; sons Richard Phillip Matthews of Salisbury, MD, and Jeff (Cindy) Matthews of Pocomoke, MD; daughter and best friend Judie (Jerry) Abbott of Georgetown, DE; two grandchildren, Brittany and Phillip Matthews and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Betty Risley; brothers - Walter Klapp, Allen Klapp, Charles Klapp, Howard Klapp, Bruce Klapp; sisters - Evelyn Klapp and Ellen B. Collins Bloxom.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the ASPCA, PO BOX 96929, Washington, DC  20090-6929.

Visitation will be held at Holloway Funeral Home in Pocomoke City on Saturday, August 11, 2018, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held immediately following visitation with Rev.
