Obituary of Terrence F. Blades

Terrence “Terry” F. Blades, of Pocomoke City, MD, died on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Born in Crisfield, MD, he was the son of the late Dolores and Mervin Blades.

He was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and attended the University of Maryland, College Park.

He was President/CEO of Mervin L. Blades & Son, Inc., General Contractors, of Pocomoke City, MD. The company was founded in 1939 by his father as a sand and gravel business, and eventually expanded to include a ready mix concrete operation.  Terry joined the company in 1956 and moved the firm into commercial building construction. He took over the company in 1968 after his father’s death and grew it into one of Delmarva’s most prestigious builders.  Operating the company together with his late wife, Sharlene, they received numerous industry awards and accolades for projects through the years until the company closed in 2012 at Mr. Blades’ retirement.  He received a “Man of the Year” award, from the Lower Shore YMCA, for his efforts in soliciting donations and for services rendered to construct the new YMCA facility in Pocomoke City.  For many years, Terry also served as General Manager of Blades Materials, Inc., a division of The Arundel Corporation.

His interests included golfing, boating, and fishing.  He was an avid Ravens fan and loved tailgating with friends. He was a member of Pitts Creek Presbyterian Church, Pocomoke Elks Lodge #1624, and former member of Nassawango Country Club. He enjoyed time spent at his home on the Pocomoke River, but enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by daughter Candise Blades-Dunleavy and her husband Kevin Dunleavy, grandson Kevin Brian Dunleavy, Jr., granddaughter Sharlene Kaitlin Dunleavy; sisters-in-law Barbara Somers Davis and husband John, Nicki Somers-Bashor; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by not only his parents but also his wife, Sharlene Somers Blades.

The services that will celebrate the life and legacy of Terry Blades are as follows. The viewing will be held at Holloway Funeral Home in Pocomoke City on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Prior to the funeral service on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, a visitation will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, in Pocomoke City, MD, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the funeral service will immediately follow. The interment will be at First Baptist Cemetery in Pocomoke City. The Reverend Father William Porter will officiate the service.
