Obituary of Henry Vinyard JR

Henry Lee Vinyard Jr, 65, of Salisbury, died Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. Henry was born on January 19, 1946 in Dover, Delaware; he was the son of Olive Hastings and the late Elmer Hastings of Parsonsburg, MD. He was preceded in death by his birth parents, Henry Lee and Velma Argo Vinyard of Milford, DE. Henry graduated from Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, VA. in 1964. In 1969 he received his Bachelor of Science from the College of Business and Public Administration at University of Maryland; during the spring of 1966 he transferred to Chapman College, College of the Seven Seas Division, located aboard the SS Ryndam. During that semester he attended classes while sailing through the Panama Canal, down the east coast of South America to Buenos Aires, Argentina, across the South Atlantic to Africa, up through Europe and Scandinavia, across the North Atlantic to the United States. After his travels and studies aboard the SS Ryndam he returned back to the University of Maryland to complete his degree. During his summers in college Henry life guarded on the Ocean City Beach Patrol and obtained the position of Sergeant. He later went on to attend the University of Baltimore, School of Law and received his Juris Doctorate. After receiving his law degree he was admitted to practice with the Maryland Court of Appeals and United States District Court in 1974 and United States Supreme Court in 1977. Shortly after the swearing ceremony at the Maryland Court of Appeals, he began working for the Wicomico County State's Attorney's Office as full time assistant. In the 1980's he began private practice in Salisbury. He served as a Director on the Board of Sussex Shores Water Company, Bethany Beach, DE, he was Chief Volunteer Officer for the Mid Delmarva YMCA, was a director on the Board of the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc., and also served as legal counsel for the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc. since 1997, he was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church Administrative Board and was a member and past president of the Salisbury Rotary Club. He was a standing examiner for the Circuit Court for Wicomico County since 1982. His memberships included but were not limited to; Trial Court Judicial Nominating Commission for the First Judicial Court, Attorney Grievance Commission of Maryland Peer Review Committee, Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers, Salisbury Jaycees, Maryland Jaycees, US Jaycees, Board of Directors of Go-Getters, Phi Delta Theta and the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Ansley Short Vinyard of Salisbury; two sons, Henry Lee Vinyard III of Fayetteville, NC and Joseph Philip Vinyard of New York, NY. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 1 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church in Salisbury. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Holloway Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. A private interment will be held on Friday at Barrett's Chapel in Frederica, Delaware.
