Obituary of Charles Barnes, Sr.

Charles D. Barnes, Sr., “Dave”, 83, departed this life on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Hartley Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Pocomoke City after a lengthy illness.

 

Dave was born September 9, 1934 in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late Charles A. Barnes and Ruth Barnes.

 

Dave grew up in the Pikesville area and attended Milford Mill High School and graduated in 1954 from St. Paul’s High School in Baltimore. He then attended Western Maryland College where he met and married his wife, Ellen Duncan Barnes, on June 25, 1955. They were married for 62 years prior to her death on January 1, 2018.

 

As a young man Dave was very involved in many forms of sports, including a local men’s basketball team. He was a sales manager at several local car dealerships in Pocomoke and Salisbury. Dave had his own used car dealership in Nelsonia, VA, “Dave Barnes’ Used Cars”. He later worked with his father in a family owned drywall business, “Drywall Systems”. Their business did jobs on the Lower Eastern Shore, including the Ocean City and Fenwick area. Following his father’s death Dave worked for and retired from the Worcester County Liquor Control Board, in the Pocomoke Store.

 

Dave enjoyed duck hunting, duck carving and his pet dogs, especially his black labs. Dave also served in the Naval Reserves as a “Frogman”. He was also a past Exalted Ruler of the Pocomoke City Elks Lodge.

 

Dave is survived by his son, Chuck Barnes and his wife Pam and his only grandson, Dylan T. Barnes all of Pocomoke City and his daughter, C. Lynn Barnes of Salisbury, MD and a sister, Sharon Chenoweth of Hampstead, MD and her three sons.

 

A Memorial Service, officiated by Pastor Jimmy Cullen, will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Holloway Funeral Home in Pocomoke City, where family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow in the First Baptist Cemetery in Pocomoke City, MD.
