Obituary of Richard Brodell

Richard Lee Brodell, 89, of Salisbury, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2018, peacefully at Wicomico Nursing Home.  Born on February 19, 1928 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Albert P. and Fay Marston Brodell.

Richard grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland and graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army before the end of WWII and served in Japan with the 25th Infantry (Tropic Lightning Division).  He is a graduate of the University of Maryland where he earned a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.  Richard’s career included 30 years as a project manager with the Naval Surface Weapons Center where he was involved with most of the major weapon designs during that time.  Following his work with the U.S. Government, he spent ten years with the defense contractor, Vitro Corporation.

Richard was married to Mary Ellen for more than 64 years and resided in Silver Spring, MD where they raised their three children before retiring to the Eastern Shore.  Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, fishing, long distance driving and was an automobile enthusiast. He was a long-time member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, DE, and most recently a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish Catholic Church in Salisbury, MD.

Richard is survived by his wife Mary Ellen Brodell of Salisbury, MD; three children, Joseph Brodell and his wife Paula of Jefferson, MD; Barbara Powell and her husband Richard of Lewes, DE; and Charles Brodell and his wife Kimberly of Salisbury, MD, as well as six grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, DE.  A reception at the church hall will follow.  The interment will take place on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 11.00 a.m. at the Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro, DE. 

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Salvation Army
