Obituary of Jerry Pike

Jerry Wayne Pike, 79, died Sunday, April 1, 2018, at PRMC in Salisbury, MD.   Born in Des Moines, Iowa, he was the son of the late Walter Thornton Pike and Thelma Elizabeth Hol Pike. 

 

Jerry began his career upon graduation from Drake University in Des Moines as a physicist with the U.S. Department of Defense.  Recruited during his senior year at Drake, his first position was with the U.S. Navy in Panama City, Florida.  Following this, positions included Washington D.C., Arlington, VA, and Wallops Island, MD.  Over the course of his career Jerry worked on sonar systems, naval patrol boats, naval gun systems, radar systems, and missile systems.  His work took him to S.E. Asia, S. Korea, and Norway.  Managing the evaluation of a Norwegian system for surface to surface missiles led him to a NATO surface to air missile system, the development of a new integrated missile program and other efforts.  Jerry was passionate in his work and enjoyed many close friends in the field.  Jerry received the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Medal for his contribution.

 

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, the former Carolyn Sue Joyce of Atlantic, Iowa; his daughter, Shelly Rutherford and son-in-law William Rutherford of Pensacola, FL; his son Travis Pike and fiancée Megan Wikander of Salisbury, MD; and granddaughters Christina Rutherford of Tampa, FL and Evelyn Pike of Salisbury, MD.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Gregory Scot Pike of Lorton, Virginia.

 

Jerry followed several business interests including Oceanx Incorporated, and Delmarva Synthetics.  Jerry was a long time member of many outdoor organizations such as Maryland Master Gardeners, Ducks Unlimited, and Life Member of the National Rifle Association and the Maryland State Rifle and Pistol Association.  He was most fond of duck and quail hunting, fooling with bird dogs, fishing and boating.

 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 11:00am at the Allen-Asbury United Methodist Church in Allen, MD with a visitation one hour prior to the service.  Officiating will be Rev. Kelly Conner and Chaplain Pam Wulff.  Inurnment will be at a later date in Earlham, IA.
