Obituary of Doris Smith

Doris Elaine Smith, 86, of Fruitland, passed peacefully on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.  Born on July 21, 1931 in Georgetown, DE, she was the daughter of the late Norman H. and Kathryn I. (Tucker) Jester.


Doris attended Georgetown High School.  After high school she worked at DuPont in Seaford, DE and then moved to Fruitland where she started work as an accountant in 1953, first with Shoreland Freezers then with Raymond Weisner Real Estate.  Later she was self-employed doing accounting and income taxes.  In 1967 she joined the Eastern Shore Oil Company as an accountant and office manager, until the sale of the business in 1986 and at that time continued with the owners in their personal businesses, holding this position for 42 years.


She was an honorary member of the Fruitland Ladies Auxiliary serving at their lunches and dinners.  Doris was a member of the Degree of Pocahontas for the past 64 years on the local, state and national levels.  She joined the Modoc Council No. 32 of Salisbury in 1953 and later transferred to Tippecanoe Council No. 100.  She was a dual member with Red Feather Council No. 59, Williamsport and Tony Tank Council No. 61, Fruitland.  Doris served on the Past Pocahontas-Modoc Council in 1954 and held the position of Keeper of Record for several years.  She joined the Great Council of Maryland in 1955, served as Great Pocahontas of Maryland from 1962-1963 and Great Keeper of Records of Maryland from 1970-1974.  In 1964 she joined the National Degree of Pocahontas and served on several committees including the role of National Keeper of Record from 1978-1986.  In addition she served as COPD Zone Chief from 1990-1992, National Charity and COPD for the Great Council of US, Improved Order of Redmen.  She was also associated with the degree of Anona No. 5, Fruitland.  She loved dedicating her time to the Degree of Pocahontas and made many friends through the organization over the years and was loved by many. She will be dearly missed.  Doris has a profound love for this organization and advanced to the highest level a member can achieve, Past National Pocahontas.


Doris was a wonderful daughter and sister and dearly loved mother and grandmother. She loved to travel with her friends. She lived life to the fullest and always had a good time at whatever she did.  She loved to dance and most often was the first one on the dance floor and the last one off.


In addition to her parents, Doris is preceded in death by her brothers, John M., Merrill J., Gerald W. and George K. Jester.


Doris is survived by her daughter, Brenda Harris and her husband Rich of Middletown, DE; her son, Dean B. Smith and his wife Christine of Delmar, DE; four grandchildren, Robert, Ryan (Kendra) and Travis (Chelsea) Livingston and Kaylee Smith; six great-grandchildren, Victoria, Cody, Taylor, Bryce, Bo and Braelynn; a brother, Dennis Jester and his wife Angela of Lewes, DE and several nieces and nephews.


A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January, 13, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Holloway Funeral Home, Salisbury.  A visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Pastor Brent Smith will officiate.
