James Alan Laws, 67, of Salisbury, died on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at Coastal Hospice At The Lake after a long illness. Jim was born on May 29, 1950 in Salisbury and was the middle son of the late James Laws and Elizabeth Griffin Laws.
Jim graduated from Wicomico Sr. High School in 1968 and attended Delaware Technical Community College. He began a career in construction as a carpenter in 1972 and for the next 26 years encompassed high rise construction, residential construction, millwork and cabinetmaking. He found the most pleasure as a woodworker. In 1998, Jim accepted a position with Wicomico County as a building inspector and was promoted to chief building inspector in 2008.
Jim appreciated and enjoyed watching animals in their natural setting. He remained curious about the world around him. He was alert to the lives and interests of his family and friends and was a devoted son. He loved the game of baseball, working in his shop and camping with Ellen and their dog, Lucy.
He is survived by his loving wife and love of his life, Ellen; his daughter, Holly Autumn Dozier; three grandchildren, Caila, Jadah, and Havan Dozier; two brothers, John William Laws (Sallie), and Ronald Lee Laws (Cynthia), all of Salisbury; several nephews and nieces; and a life long friend, James Russell Hopkins, Jr. of Sandia Park, NM.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 12 noon at the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 5757 Coventry Parish Road, Westover, MD 21871, with Pastors Suzannah DeBenedetto and Kirk Dausman officiating. A Celebration of Life will follow at the church fellowship hall.
